On the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022
Arizona Interfaith Power & Light formed in 2009 to shine a light on the causes and solutions for the climate crisis, and to help prepare people for the changes that would be required to combat it. But we always knew that personal choices were only a part of the solution. The world cannot overcome the climate crisis without bold action from the United States, working alongside other countries. People of faith and conscience in Arizona have added a significant voice during this time.
For all these years, we have been calling on the federal government to apply the resources needed to respond to the worsening climate crisis. And for so many years, Congress has not responded. Now, with a very short window of time before the current political opportunity is gone, Congress is taking a step in the right direction.
The climate provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act will get us to 40% of our 2005 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. How is this law doing that? It is giving families and small businesses the help they need to reduce their energy use and adopt clean energy. It is allowing states, counties and municipalities to deploy their climate plans with much-needed funds for electrifying transportation, conserving energy and transitioning to renewable energy. And there are funds for states to adopt energy-saving programs, reduce pollution, address environmental injustice and create more resilient communities. None of this could be accomplished without federal investment.
Yes, compromises were made, and the 50% goal was changed to 40%. But that 40% reduction in greenhouse gases is a huge step that will move the world toward where we need to be. The calculations don’t even include the accelerator effects of the Green Bank and other provisions. In mid-July, we thought all was lost. Now, we are creating a brighter future.
All of these programs require local commitment and attention to make them work in Arizona. That is our next challenge: helping individuals and families in our congregations and communities access these programs, while holding public officials accountable for adopting the opportunities that will benefit our citizens. We must secure the promise of justice and equity by working alongside those most impacted. We must ensure that Arizona is doing its part to end the climate crisis that is having such dire consequences in our state. AZIPL is committed to moving into this next phase of addressing the climate crisis. Will you join us?
